Why do the American cheese is orange in color

Why do the American cheese is orange in color?
Wen I live (Italy) there are a very whide choise of chees (from Italy, Swiss and France) and each fresh chees are white (like mozzarella, crescenza, robiola...) and in the mature chees the color become (by passing the months) light yellow (like parmigiano reggiano, emmentaler, pecorino...) In the movie and in McDonalds cheesburger, I saw that american chees is ORANGE, why? If the milk is white, what is the needing of transform the natural color in an artificial orange by adding color to ingredients? you say "i think they feel it makes it look more appetizing" but I think the opposite because.. the milk is white not orange. Were i live the chees must made BY LAW with only 3 ingredients: milk, salt and "caglio" (Rennet??). It's so strange see orange chees... Here, only nederland chees have color added

Usually turmeric is added to cheeses to give it that 'lovely orange' color. I don't know why cheese manufacturers add it in either.

they use food coloring to give american cheese it's color. like wisconsin cheddar has a dye in it to give it it's orange hue, while vermont cheddar is white, because of omission of the food dye.

It's food dye. Some people believe it makes the cheese more appetizing. Usually it is done with cheddar, American, and Colby (a Wisconsin cheese.) I'm sure there are others, but those are the only ones I know of.

It's not needed, and not all of it is orange. (for the most part, the only american cheese that I see orange is at fast food restaurants and in 'Kraft' singles). I don't know why they add food coloring to it.... I guess some brands do just to be different.

It has to do with with the orange color of the fungal culture they originally used to make their "cheese". Nowadays, they add an artificial dye, because people are used to it. Without the dye, it'd be a palish white color.

Most cheeses are naturally white or pale cream in color. The bright orange and yellow cheeses such as cheddar, American, etc. commonly found in the supermarket are dyed with a natural coloring called annatto. Some regions (such as Vermont, in the United States) prefer not to color their cheese and are proud of their white cheddar and other varieties. PS - Many cooks in Latin American (and the PI) color their food with annatto. Annatto is a seed

Whatever the reason they dye it you can bet it has something to do with making more money. As already pointed out, cheese is naturally white or whiteish in color. Also, I wouldn't go so far as to call whatever Micky D's puts on a burger 'cheese'. A cheese appearing substance would be more accurate, rather like the 'meat' appearing substance they call burger. ;)
