Can a US citizen join the Swiss Military

Can a US citizen join the Swiss Military? or gain dual citizenship?
I am interested in living in Switzerland and would love to join their military. Is this even possible? I don't believe any of my family is of Swiss decent.

Gaining Swiss citizenship -- and consequently dual citizenship -- may well be possible. Once recognised as a Swiss, joining their military may be quite more problematical and, if done, may mandate the relinquishing of American citizenship, thereby ending dual citizenship rights. Few nations permit military membership by persons with actual or potential divided allegiance. One wonders why there is an attraction to join the Swiss military. Being a neutral nation, the majority of Switzland's military is composed of a volunteer citizen militia who exercise as units various times throughout the year. The intervening times the citizens have standard life pursuits. Of the extremely few permanent standing military, only the very elite are considered for training as Papal guards. Permanent regulars being few, the training can be extremely exacting and some government sponsored mercenary hiring out of elite anti-terrorism capability occurs. Edit: Travel HQ Services labels all previous responses as incorrect, then confirms what I postulated. Go figure!

You know, everyone is giving you the wrong information. You can end up working for the Swiss Military but you will end up losing your citizenship. Under certain circumstances you may lose your U.S. citizenship by performing, voluntarily and with the intention to relinquish U.S. citizenship, any of the following acts: (1) being naturalized in a foreign state; (2) taking an oath or making a declaration to the foreign state; (3) serving in the armed forces of the foreign state; (4) accepting employment with a foreign government; or (5) formally renouncing U.S. citizenship before a U.S. consular officer overseas. Unless you want to lose your American citizenship, do not join the Swiss Military. It is not the smartest thing to do. Go ahead and join the American army. But again this is a"may" stipulation.
