Living in Baden-Wurttemberg

Living in Baden-Wurttemberg!?
I am in highschool and I'm going on exchange to Germany for a year in August. However, I recently found out that my host family lives in Baden-Wurttemberg, more specifically Villingen-Schwenningen. I heard they speak a lot of Swiss German there! Will this inhibit me from learning Standard German that i so desperately desire??

In the federal state of Baden Württemberg nobody speaks swiss German they do speak a local dialect which is called Schwäbisch. Also nobody will speak dialect with a foreigner so do not worry you will have no trouble learning German.

Hi there, the people in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg do NOT speak Swiss-German, however, they speak a local dialect. You have the same here in the U.S. when you are in the South, in New York, etc. However, usually people do not use the dialect when speaking with foreigners. Also, when you go to highschool there, the teachers will pretty much speak without much dialect. Villingen-Schwenningen is a very nice part of Baden-Wuerttemburg, I bet you will love your stay in Germany. Have a great time.

Maybe just a little, still try learning standard German somehow. Maybe listening to voice recordings or something like that. It's kind of like if someone wanted to learn standard English, but they have an Australian host family, they'd probably learn Australian English, which is different from standard. But not that different. Hope this helped.
