Whilst working on his theory the Swiss scientist lived on coffee, cheap sausages, and rolls. 1916 The prevalent food of the British army fighting in the Great War is corned beef. The "Tommies" are calling it "bully beef" because it is cooked beef, from the French bouilli for "boiled." Clarence Birdseye, a Government field naturalist, is working as a fur trader in Labrador. He has noticed that freshly caught fish, when placed onto the Arctic ice by the Eskimos and exposed to the icy wind and frigid temperatures, freezes solid almost immediately. How about this. There are only two methods of getting food (energy for living things). 1. The life form can take energy directly from the source, such as the light from the sun. "autotroph" 2. Those who must consume autotrophs, to get energy. "heterotrpohs", most bacteria, most fungi, all animals and therefore...us humans. So, food began with autotrophs! lol
